A CI workshop bridging the practices of Contact Improvisation, awareness practices, and Contemporary dance.
I see CI as a transformative practice — a dance practice, but also a life practice.
I would describe life itself as a hopefully playful, often challenging, and improvisational practice. Contact Improvisation is a call to presence. The playful chaos and the complex nonverbal
communication create a rich and fertile ground to enjoy the process of learning more about yourself, your body, and the way you interact with other beings. A laboratory for life and for dance —
an ever-shifting space to somatically and verbally explore some of the questions we carry.
For me, the playful, sometimes challenging, and unpredictable nature of CI is a constant invitation to stay awake and return to the present moment again and again.
In this workshop, we explore how mindfulness practices and somatic movement approaches can open the door to a more articulate and joyful dance with ourselves and with others. There will be guided and score-based explorations, as well as Contemporary dance coordination and technique, and also technical lifts, transitions, and partnering elements ranging from simple to acrobatic.
Momentum, gravity, being curious, direction, and body connection are topics we will wrestle with.
The workshop is aimed at people who already have some prior experience in Contact Improvisation or Contemporary dance.
Janosch was born and raised in a physical environment, full of play, nature, exploration, observation, wrestling, swimming, hiking, and climbing.
Throughout
his childhood, he was introduced to martial arts and team sports, and as a teenager to breakdancing.
Fascinated
by the world of dance, Janosch studied contemporary dance and choreography at the Center for Contemporary Dance in Cologne and the ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem. Additionally, Janosch
did the basic year of studying Gestalttherapie at the InKontakt Institute for Gestalt in Berlin.
During his studies of dance, Janosch was always curious about mindfulness, movement, and sports in general, and learned through workshops, books, podcasts, seminars, and online programs from
people like Joerg Hassmann (CI), Katja Mustonen (CI), Jozef Frucek & Linda Kapetanea (Fighting Monkey), Niels Robitzki (Urban Dance Studies), Rafe Kelley (Evolve, Move, Play), Simon Thakur
(Ancestral Movement), Emmet Louis, Matthew Smith, Sam Harris (Mindfulness), and Jack Kornfield(Mindfulness).
Janosch
has been teaching dance to professionals, students at dance & circus academies, at various independent studios, he hosted jams & research labs and also he has been teaching mindful
movement to older people for the last years.
After working as a dance performer, choreographer and teacher in countries like Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Hong Kong (China), and Austria, Janosch now lives in Leipzig, Germany, sharing his knowledge, researching dance and movement with his colleagues, and works as a freelance performer.
