Synapses & Connections

"The great thing, then, in all education, is to make our nervous system our ally instead of our enemy.” — William James

Moving from the inside out and from the outside in, we will use dance as a tool to explore, research, and enhance our sense of presence and interaction. Through improvisation, touch, and weight sharing, we will move in solo, duets, and groups, allowing contact to move and transform us, pushing us to enter the new and the unpredictable. We will welcome an instinctive, animalistic, primordial part of ourselves that will nourish the dance and explore our nervous system regulation, discovering how Contact Improvisation can support and enhance this process.
Cristina and Angela-Mara began collaborating two years ago, researching and teaching the material shared by Nancy Stark Smith. The breadth of this exploration and the pleasure of doing it together led them to create new events to continue this journey.

Cristina Crippa is an interdisciplinary artist and passionate movement researcher and teacher, who lives between Italy and Ireland. After several years of research in contemporary dance, she discovered her passion for contact improvisation, improvisation, and composition while studying sculpture and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. From that moment, her curiosity led her to shift her focus from canvas to the body in relation to others and space.

She has been practicing contact improvisation since 2010. In 2013, driven by a desire to understand the roots of contact improvisation, she traveled to Earthdance (Massachusetts, USA) to study with Nancy Stark Smith, one of the pioneers of this practice. Upon returning to Italy, she began teaching in 2014. For seven years, she led regular classes at Artichoke, a contemporary dance program in Milan, and curated workshops, jams, and events in Italy and throughout Europe.

Cristina also collaborates with Effetto Larsen, a collective that uses relational art to strengthen a sense of community.    //   Instagram: @cristicrips

Angela-Mara Florant had her first experience with CI during her performance arts studies in Besançon, France. Based in Hamburg, she teaches several regular contact classes, gives workshops and organizes jams and festivals - NORDTANZ Festival. Since 2015, she is co- director of the dance studio “ Triade ” in Hamburg.

In 2022, she brought to life the Contact CompanI, a dance company performing CI. When Angela-Mara is not dancing or teaching contact she is teaching corART (Pilates), directing independent theater productions, choreographing dance pieces.

Teachers that have inspired her work are: Nancy Stark Smith, Jörg Hassmann, Nita Little, Anjelika Doniy, Mirva Mäkinen, Martin Keogh, Frey Faust, Scott Wells, Andrew Hardwood, Daniel Lepkoff and more.         //    Instagram: @angelamaraflorant

Synapsen & Verbindungen
