“The great thing, then, in all education, is to make our nervous system our ally instead of our enemy.”— William James
This workshop explores Contact Improvisation through the lens of the nervous system, focusing on the vagus nerve’s role in emotional self-regulation, co-regulation, and safety. We will explore movement in solo, duets, and groups through breathwork, improvisation, touch, and weight sharing. The aim is to develop greater awareness of our own regulation and nervous system state, discovering how Contact Improvisation can support and enhance this process.
Cristina and Angela-Mara began collaborating two years ago, researching and teaching the material shared by Nancy Stark Smith. The breadth of this exploration and the pleasure of doing it together led them to create new events to continue this journey.
Cristina Crippa is an interdisciplinary artist and passionate movement researcher and teacher,
who lives between Italy and Ireland. After several years of research in contemporary dance, she discovered her passion for contact improvisation, improvisation, and composition while studying
sculpture and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera. From that moment, her curiosity led her to shift her focus from canvas to the body in relation to others and space.
She has been practicing contact improvisation since 2010. In 2013, driven by a desire to understand the roots of contact improvisation, she traveled to Earthdance (Massachusetts, USA) to study
with Nancy Stark Smith, one of the pioneers of this practice. Upon returning to Italy, she began teaching in 2014. For seven years, she led regular classes at Artichoke, a contemporary dance
program in Milan, and curated workshops, jams, and events in Italy and throughout Europe.
